Met Gala muses: Designers and their dates on fashion’s biggest night
The Met Gala is famously known as “the Super Bowl of fashion,” and the sartorial scoreboard is set according to who wears what, and who attends with whom. Designers and brands choose their gala guests carefully, collaborating with them closely for weeks, or even months, to create the perfect look.
Beyond the iconic red carpet moment on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, they also sit at the same table inside the exclusive dinner, which perhaps explains why Marc Jacobs has invited his friends-cum-muses Kate Moss (2009) and Sofia Coppola (2013) in the past. Jeremy Scott has also been known to invite his gal pals, including Katy Perry (2015) and Madonna (2017). Friendships aside, brands increasingly endeavour to send the poster girls—and boys—down the red carpet in their designs to cement said star’s synonymy with the brand. Who could forget Marc Jacobs’ 2017 arrival, with his then campaign star Frances Bean Cobain, and her mum Courtney Love.
The Met Gala has a long history of power pairings. Cast your mind back to 1995, when a fresh-faced Kate Moss made her Met Gala debut with Calvin Klein, wearing a pastel coloured slip dress alongside Christy Turlington. That same year, Naomi Campbell shimmied down the red carpet in a sparkling gown with designer-of-the-decade Gianni Versace. His younger sister and muse Donatella joined him the following year, clad in a bondage-style dress. Since taking over the helm of the Italian fashion house, she has invited the likes of Cindy Crawford (2009), Jennifer Lopez (2015), and Kylie Jenner (2017) as her Met Gala guests. Other storied pairings include Cher and lifetime costume collaborator Bob Mackie in 1974 and 1985. (The singer’s ‘naked’ dresses later served as inspiration for that Kim Kardashian Cavalli look at the Met in 2015). Last but in no way least, who could forget the moment Liv Tyler and best friend Stella McCartney (then Chloé’s creative director) turned up to the 1999 ‘Rock Style’-themed gala in matching ‘Rock Royalty’ T-shirts?
Recently, the trend has veered towards the Met Gala girl squad: designers hitting the red carpet with an A-list posy. Think Stefano Gabbana’s 2003 ensemble, featuring Naomi Campbell, Victoria Beckham and Linda Evangelista; or Stella McCartney’s gaggle of girl power in 2014, including Cara Delevingne, Rihanna, Reese Witherspoon and Kate Bosworth, each dressed in one-off pieces. 2016 saw the ultimate designer date squads step out in force, with gentlemen thrown into the mix: Olivier Rousteing marched en masse with his ‘Balmain Army’ of supermodels; Gucci’s Alessandro Michele attended with long-time muses Dakota Johnson, Charlotte Casiraghi and Jared Leto; and the then Valentino designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli were accompanied by an impressive roster including Lorde, Lily Collins, Zoe Kravitz and Miles Teller.
